Staffordshire County Council libraries, on behalf of the author, have submitted this story. The author fully understands the rules and regulations of the People's War website.
I was a child during the war. I remember going in Anderson shelters - they were wet and cold. My grandfather made blackout boards for the windows of our house. When I went to school I had to take a cup for milk which was ladelled out. I remember I broke my cup after the very first week and my mother wouldn't let me have another cup so I used a chipped enamel school mug. I had a gas mask in a brown box.....I never had to use it but was reprimanded by the local policeman named Constable Abrahams, who had a wax moustache, because I went out without my gas mask with me.
I remember my grandfather's uncle, who lived in America, used to sent us food and clothes parcels. In them was tinned bacon and dried egg and also clothes. I used to visit my great aunt's shop - she once gave us coca powder and condensed milk and my gran mixed them together and we had it on sandwiches - lovely!!
