With the End of WW2. occuring in May 1945,being in Borgo-san-Lorenzo north of Florence,we were involved in covering and recovering vehicles from Convoys of lorry loads of prisoners of war returning from the front, the "Gothic Line" between Florence
and Bologna. Shortly after we moved up to Piacenza helping to keep the Pontoon Bridge over the River Po clear. Later we moved back to Modena where we served an area of the "Mille Miele".
Whilst transporting a convoy of Vehicles from Modena to Monza (Milan) including tank-recovery lorries, I was in a 15Cwt lorry at the rear of 5(five) others on Straight-Tow, second-day en-route noticed that the "Pin" holding the shackle to the Tow-Bar was steadily unscrewing itself with the vibration, this would have dropped-out and off into the road throwing my lorry off the the road and down the Embankment! Try contacting the towing vehicle "A Scammell Diamond T" to STOP! No chance, no Electrics-no Horn.Apply Brakes!! just Smoke and Burning Rubber. SHOUT Hopeless. Finally applying the brakes "on and off" creating a jerking sensation to the whole convoy solved the problem, as we rolled to stand the pin dropped out ready for a secure replacement. Before continuing on to Monza. From Modena we moved on to Milan where we moved into the Lambretta factory in the district of Lambrate.
