On VE Night I went with my parents to a performance of 'Peer Gynt' at the Manchester Opera House given by the Old Vic Company with Ralph Richardson playing Peer Gynt and Lawrence Olivier playing the very small part of the button maker. After the show we walked through Albert Square to catch a train home. The square was jammed with people dancing and singing, most of them well lubricated needless to say!
I wanted to stay and watch all these adults enjoying themselves , but my Dad felt it wasn't an appropriate place for a 12 year old so we made our way to Oxford Road Station and the train to Altrincham. I have always been sorry that I didn't stay, but in 1945 dads word was Law!
