Norman Anderson a young man of 18 had lived all his life in Byker and came from a large family. When war broke out in 1939 he volunteered to serve in the air force, where he learnt to drive lorries. The lorries were transported by cargo planes to the North African desserts. Norman's job was to drive the lorries cargo of food, ammunition, post and medical supplies in a large convoy to the front line. When he left the air force in 1945 he married Doreen, a Welsh girl who had worked in the munitions factories. They had met while Norman had been stationed in Wales. They married on May 5th 1945. As food was still being rationed at this time, the neighbours donated from their own limited supplies to make it a special day to remember. When Norman and his bride came back to the North East to start their married life he discovered that many houses in the area had been bombed, luckily his house was one of a few that was still untouched. He also discovered that many of his friends and neighbours had been killed. Both Norman and Doreen lost brothers during the war.
