On 6th June 1944 the big invasion of France's beaches took place. I was down below on HMS Cotswold in the engine room which was extremely noisy.
When I came off watch at 8am the invasion had started. I looked outside and you could see many bodies floating in the water. The engineer officer took me to the ward room and told me the sad news that my mother had died and because I was on active service I wouldn't get any leave for three months.
We convoyed from the UK all the time, right up until the war finished. We had a doctor on board and we moved to Holland where children were innoculated.
When the war ended we landed at Brunsbuttle Coog and it was there that we celebrated the end of the war. We picked up convoys back to the UK. Once we were coming back with a convoy in thick fog and we met a Destroyer coming the other way. Had we collided, it would have knocked people off the bridge.
