I was 13 when the war started, and my older brother, Bill, joined the Royal Airforce. I became quite an expert in spotting planes because of this. When he was flying nearby, he would buzz my school in his plane.
One day as I was walking down the road, I heard a plane approaching and looked up to identify it. As it got nearer I could see that it was a German plane, another one to tick off the list. Suddenly a man ran out from one the houses and quickly pulled me inside, out of danger. I found out later that the German pilot had strafed a whole field of sheep further down the road. It was only then that I realised what might have happened, and felt shaken up.
