I was six years old and I remember the war starting up.
The thing that struck me was the darkness - everything was black and there were no lights anywhere.
Then we we were plunged into rationing.
You couldn't get ships across to bring food, so I never saw a banana until well after the war or oranges.
We were well fed though because my dad, like others, had an allotment and we had chickens and rabbits in the garden.
Manual workers had extra cheese rations.
You had evapourated milk on fruit or jelly, never cream. We also had condensed milk.
