Me and three friends aged 13 and 14 used to go searching for souvenirs of shrapnel after raids. One day after an ammunition train had been blown up, we went to the rail track at Townsend Lane to see what we could find. However, there was lots of security there in the form of police and army personnel. We decided to go to Windosr Rd, a quarter of a mile away, and scramble over the wall and get onto the tracks that way. We climbed over and lying on the ground was a 4ft long bomb. We decided to take it for a souvenir and tried lifting it onto a homemade cart (planks and pram wheels). Because, it was so heavy we dropped it a few times before finally getting it onto the cart. We wheeled it round to friends’ houses and when their mothers saw it they screamed. The fathers chased us, we were too frightened to go to the police so we wheeled it back and put it where we had found it. We never found out what happened to it or even whether it was one of ours or a German one. It might even still be there!!!
