I lived in Stalybridge as a child, and when bananas were unobtainable, the bananas which were grown in the hothouse in Stamford Parks conservatory were given to a little girl in Stalybridge who had a rare disease.

When I was a child at St. Peter's School in Stalybridge, we took a tuck box with us to school as well as our gas masks. On Friday afternoon we went in the air raid shelters, in Cheltenhams Park, adjacent to our school and ate the goodies in our tuck boxes.
