I met my husband in October 1944. He was in training for going across to Germany. He and his pals had come to the local cinema where I worked. He walked me home that same night and asked if he could see me the following night if he wasn’t on duty. He did turn up the following night and subsequent nights before returning to camp. We saw each other at every opportunity we could. The following May 1945 we knew he was going out to the Far East to fight the ‘Japs.’ He asked permission to marry me as we didn’t know when this terrible war was going to finish. We went to get a special licence and heard on May 8th that war was over. We were delighted.
We married on Thursday 10th May 1945 at Belper. We went back home and had a lovely wedding breakfast and then my brand new husband had to report back for duty as they were all being shipped out to the Far East. Fortunately his Regiment were sent back to Germany to clean up out there. We had a good marriage with five children. It would have been our diamond wedding last May 10th. But sadly my dear husband wasn’t here to share it with me as he past away three and a half years ago.
So that was my wartime love story which remained through our marriage. I still live him as dearly today and I would do it all again.
