Just an initial piece about my mother who sadly died in 1967, but who was a sergeant in the ATS on Romney Marsh around 1943- 44 (?)and who was commanding an ac ac gun during this time. I have never heard of women actually shooting german planes out of the sky and in her words 'getting quite a few of the planes before they got to London'
She was camped for 12 months of the year in army tents and half way through her years of duty the womens rations of rum were stopped, I believe because the rector thought it inappropriate for women to have drink on a regular basis ...... 'do they think we dont feel the cold because we are women?'She was not best pleased!
It seems there has been a wall of silence in the past as to how women were involved in the actual battles and not just in communications. I hope now this can be rectified and due honour can be given to their extreme hardships and great courage.
Her name was Kathleen Hopkins nee Martin of B Troop 454 Battery R.A. ATS.
