Dad on Leave in Highland Uniform
I have two pictures which tell a short story, one is my ma and pa's wedding in early 1940 when I think he was a 2nd Lieut. and he looks cheerful and happy. the second picture is when he came home on leave in Oct. 1945 when I think he looks thin and drawn. Both pictures were taken in St Albans. In the first picture he was in the Beds and Herts and in the Second he was Major H.L.Harvey MC TD, 51st battalion Seaforth Highlanders. The Seaforths lost a lot of men at Dunkirk both casualties and prisoners so my Dad was reassigned to the Seaforths where eventually he became known as the wee Major due to his lack of stature. He took part in some nasty fighting in France and Germany including an assault crossing of the Rhine, was wounded a couple of times and had friends and colleagues killed by his side. Some stories he told me others he didn't. Hence the tired and somewhat haggard look I think. Both my mum and dad are now sadly no longer with us. But these pictures tell a story I feel.
