This is a story about my dad, Albert Allen as remembered by me. He was one of 9 children and all the kids were taken from their drunken parents in 1939 and put in care. He was 3 years old at the time. In 1943 he was taken to a local authority home in Ashover, Derbyshire. It was near a US Air Force base and at Christmas trucks came to take the kids to a Christmas party. It was the first time ever that he had eaten chocolate, ice cream and fruit and they all had the best time of their lives. The Americans were so good. All the kids were given a toy jeep but when they returned to the Home, the matron took all their toys from them. He never forgot that.
In 1945 he was adopted by his grandmother in Sheldon, Birmingham, and was reunited with his brothers.
