Came 1943, I had reached the age where my voice had broken and was singing alto in the church choir. It also meant that I was of an age when I was capable of becoming an ARP messenger. Usually, we paid a call on the warden's post on the way home from church. The wardens present greeted me with open arms; putting me in charge of the post and making a B-line for the pub round the corner.
Thankfully, there was never an occasion when our district was in any danger when I was in control.
