My father served in the Gold Coast throughout the war. He was involved with coastal defense artillery in the Takoradi area (the artificial harbour)and subsequently on patrols north from the coast to the desert, marking the route followed by ferry pilots taking newly assembled Hurricanes north to Egypt. His unit of bren gun carriers and trucks had a badge painted on the wings that does not appear to be 'official' - an elephant with trunk raised pushing against a palm tree. This unit was operating in a forgotten corner of the war about which I would like to learn more. Sadly dad has been dead many years.
