I'm Charlie Monteith. During the war at the age of 14/15 I was served with the Air Training Corps based at Arlington Street next to the Ritz Hotel. Once to Twice a week 2 cadets from the ATC would take it in turns to fire watch from the rooftop of the Ritz Hotel. At the beginning of the shift we would have to check the water buckets, the sand buckets and the stirrup pump. During the long nights we would be kept well fed by the Ritz staff who would bring our sandwhiches on silver trays. To pass the time I was taught to play cards by the Ritz staff. During the time which I served with the ATC I obtained quite alot of knowledge about engines which provided me with a useful hobby for the rest of my life.
