This is a photo of my Grandad, Mr Fred Eastham, he is the tall one at the back, but I don't know the names of his friends.

My grandfather, Fred Eastham, died when I was about 12 years old, so I don't know much about what happened to him during the war apart from what my grandmother has told me. He served in the Border Regiment, and was sent first to India I think, and then onto Burma. He was wounded in the leg and came back home to Bradford, West Yorkshire, before the war ended. I will try and find out more details later.

Message 1 - The Border Regiment in Burma

Posted on: 08 September 2005 by ritsonvaljos

Hello halfan,

You should try and get hold of a copy of a book about the history of the Border Regiment by Douglas Sutherland (1972) entitled 'Tried and Valiant', publisher Leo Cooper, London (ISBN 0 85052 042 8). There is a fairly short but really good summary about the Border Regiment movements in India and Burma during WW2.

If you know, or can find out, which Battalion your Grandad was in you will be able to get a start as to where he was at any particular time before he was wounded. It should be plain sailing from there. I think the book is unfortunately out of print, but there are copies in the Cumbria County Archives so you can access a copy there, or perhaps even at the Border Regiment Museum in Carlisle.

If you can't locate a copy of the book but have got your Grandad's Battalion and the date he joined them I would be happy to look for you. Let me know if I can help further.

Best wishes,
ritsonvaljos
