Any young boy was familiar with many books and pamphlets on aircraft recognition - both friendly and enemy. These just showed a black silhouette of frontal view, side view and plan giving dimensions and armament and engine side. Most of us were as familiar with spitfires, hurricanes blemheims, fairy battles as well as the German messersmidts, dorniers, and hienkels, stukies as the back of our hands.
Most military personnel had courses where models of these aircraft painted matt black were held up for test identification. I was in the modern school Air Training Core (ATC) and sometimes we would visit RAF Henlow and one session apart from flying in Dominies was aircraft recognistion test. I realised although I knew most aircraft my eyesight was letting me down. I realised then that my ambition to become a pilot was unrealistic
