During the war I lived in Birmingham. Our house had a cellar which became our air raid shelter. We shared our shelter with our neighbours and sometimes other people who were brought in by the air raid wardens. People would entertain themselves during the raids by singing, playing the mouth organ and card games. We tried to block out what was going on above us. People sometimes sheltered under stairs or even a table.
I worked in the offices of a munitions factory and when this was bombed the staff were evacuated to the bosses' houses outside the town. Factory workers were also evacuated to out of town premises and if transport broke down or premises were bombed the workers were taken to alternative sites so that vital work continued no matter how difficult the cirmstances.
