In 1942 a group of us formed the CVH CHILDRENS VOLUNTARY HELPERS. We were aged 10 to 13 year olds and completely independent of adult help. They were happy that we kept ourselves occupied. We wore our uniform of navy blue skirts and white blouses with pride, marched around with a flag and looked for useful things to do.
When Mrs Churchill made her appeal for funds we responded by forming a drama group. We made our own costumes and stage curtains out of a white bedspread with crepe paper leaves sewn on. The stage was our garden. A tent for refreshments (mof orange juice-also good for making orange icing) and cups of tea for the grown ups.
I sent the money to Mrs Churchill and received this letter from her.
Unfortunately I forgot to include my sister鈥榮 name 鈥攏o not on purpose- but Mum was very cross and as you can see she added Margaret in her own fair hand.
The whole thing was rather ironic really as I later married a German from the Russian zone whose family endured great difficulties during the occupation. Life is certainly full of the unexpected.
