In May-June 1944 when I was about 15 I used to cycle to Northgate Grammar School along Heath Road and Colchester Road. For a week I cycled beside army lorries, tanks and guns which were travelling to Nacton Shores. They drove straight across the roundabouts, churning them up. They stayed there at a standstill for days- everyone taking out cups of tea for the soldiers. This was a decoy to make the Germans believe that the invasion was going to come from East Anglia.
I also remember standing at the gate with Grandad seeing the sky black with planes and gliders flying over on the way to Arnhem.
There was a barrage balloon on the playing field and we had to take tuck boxes to school with Horlicks and Ovaltine tablets (we had no sweets), which we could eat if we were going to spend time in the school air raid shelters-sometimes we were in there all day!
