I grew up in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, and we had an old cellar in the bottom of the house. I recall the siren going, and me and my sister going down into the cellar. Sue (my sister) hated being woken up.
In the cellar we slept in an old bath and on a camp bed. My father worked on the searchlights in Norfolk, and we would go there at Christmas. I remember going by train to Sheringham. I recall everything being dark, black. It was very frightening. This was obviously due to the blackout. I remember two people staying with us - Patrick and Michael Highem. They were from London. They were evacuees and family friends.
