I was living in Bristol during the war. I remember about 6 of my school friends were killed in an air raid. They were in a shelter in the park at the time. It was very sad. In March 1941 when I was 14 we were staying at my Aunt鈥檚 house. My father was out fire watching. There was an air raid so we went into the shelter. After a time we got fed up so we went into the house to have a cup of tea. We were sat round the table drinking tea, we could still hear the bombs, and I remember a feeling of pressure. Next thing I knew a bomb hit the house and I was trapped by rubble. My Aunt had tried to run from the room and had been killed. The heavy table had protected my legs from injury. It鈥檚 silly but I remember I was wearing my first pair of silk stockings. I had lots of injuries to the upper part of my body and my face. I lost part of my ear and had many scars. My mother almost lost a leg but they managed to save it. My Granny had no injuries, just lots of black marks on her skin. Lots of people came to dig us out, including my father. I was carried to a nearby house and laid on a rug. Some one was told to move the rug as quite a lot of my blood was going on to it. We were all taken to separate hospitals in the city. My brother was in the army but this weekend he happened to be on leave so he got to visit us. Sometimes even now when I hear a low flying plane it makes me shudder. Our house and the ones either side were completely demolished. I have led a charmed life ever since.
