This is only a short story but I can remember my mum telling it to me.My mum was 5yrs old at the outbreak of WW2 she didn't recall how old she was when the incident happened, but as we all know fresh fruit was in short supply if there was any around at all.My mum Gwen was playing in her garden with her sisters, when a huge american lorry thundered past, being curious Gwen and her sisters went to have a look as it had stopped further down the road. As they approached the lorry it started to move off .As it moved a huge black american appeared in the back of the lorry , upon seeing Gwen and her sisters he proceeded to drop oranges to them from the moving lorry and they all chased the lorry gathering oranges as they went ,until there arms were full and the blackman and the lorry were out of sight. It may seem a insignificant story to some people but that man gave my mum a lasting memory that she has never forgotten.
