Rural Gloucestershire was considered to be a safe place and the government had made detailed plans for the movement of essential departments and vital industries to this area.
A large section of the Air Ministry took up residence at Wycliff College after its staff and pupils had been relocated from Lampers in Mid Wales.
The Sperry Gyroscope Company was transferred to Bonds Mill from Brentford and a new factory was built on land behind Avenue Terrace to accommodate the Hoffman Bearing manufacturing company from Chelmsford.
Standley Cloth Mill was also used to store vital equipment for the Royal Navy as the war progressed.
