One of the saddest days was when a girl called Eileen Eagan and I were made up to sergeants, which was alright, but she was posted to Singapore. She had a fear of flying and wouldn鈥檛 go. Would I go instead? I jumped at the chance. I knew so many people there. She helped me to pack and I was going to fly the next day, but the night before I woke up. I felt as if I was in a dark room and couldn鈥檛 get out. It was a nightmare, I think. So Eileen had to go as originally planned. The plane took off from Pallam airfield, crashed and twelve girls were killed. Eight were airwomen, two were ATS girls and two were nursing staff . The next day we had a mass funeral.
