I was just ten when I was evacuated from the family home. It was truly terrible to be wripped away from the bosom of my family. I was the eldest so I had to look after my brother and sister as we said our goodbyes to my mother and father. I was supposed to be the big one and not cry so as not to upset my siblings further. Margate was a cinque port, vulnerable to attack so all children were encouraged to leave.
We were initially sent to a family in Liverpool they were marvellous.
