I was working as a qualified nurse as a WAF when, in 1945, I was posted to Cairo. I was working for the Principal Medical Officer doing clerical work with medical records. We were doing what would now be called occupational health duties as we were looking after the health of the staff. From there I was posted to the desert to a caves hospital where we looked after the troops who were sick. I next moved to Heliopolis to another sick quarters where we lived in tents. Because the locals made our lives difficult we had to move to the canal zone.
My memories of the Middle East are all good. As women we were looked after and treated well. We had lovely billets, good food and it was a lovely time for me. I would have liked to have stayed on, as it was a secure life in peacetime, but I married in 1948 and had to leave. I could not be married and continue nursing - it was not allowed!
