The 1/5 Battalion of the Royal Leicestershire Regiment were stationed at Carrickfergus in 1941. Following an horrendous air raid on Belfast they were sent in to help.

One of the factories destroyed had been the Gallagher Cigarette Factory and in clearing up, a large stock of tobacco was found. This was cut up into blocks and taken back to barracks. A great many pipes were acquired by the soldiers to smoke this unexpected bonus.
