I used to work at the railway works in Derby as a clerk in the office. I used to come to work by train from Ambergate. The sirens used to go off all the time but you just got used to it. One morning, I'd just walked into the office to see this Messerschmit plane, flying low between the sheds and coming towards us. Someone in the office pulled me under the table just in time as it flew past shooting as it went. It was the plane that went on to bomb Rolls Royce. it wasn't all bad times. I was 18 and you just got on with it. We had soldiers stationed near us in Ambergate and we used to have a good time. There was always a dance to go to which is where I met my husband - at a dance in Belper. He'd walk me home from there to Ambergate and then have to walk all the way back to Derby.
