My grandmother and grandfather came round to spend an evening with my mum and dad, and it was very lucky that they did. Whilst they were with us, a VII rocket landed just outside the Palmers Green Railway station. Luckily, no train was in at the time and the railway embankment forced the blast upwards instead of outwards. The only casualty at the station was the old ticket collector who was killed instantly.
My grandparents were particularly worried about their cat and dog.
When they returned home to the street backing on to the railway, the windows were out, many ceilings were down, there was brick dust everywhere and the valuable grandfather clock was lying on its side in the hall. It was very badly damaged. The coal hole cover had disappeared completely and was never found. As for the two pets; this is hard to believe, but they were both in the Morrison shelter without a scratch on them!
Too close for comfort, but it could have been a lot worse.
