It took six weeks by boat to get to Bombay, calling at Cape Town on the way, a very different place to anything I had seen before. Then we travelled to Bangalore by train for three days on very hard seats. After about 15 months, we went by boat to Colombo and up to Burma. This took a month in Jeeps via rough roads.

After the war we returned to catch the boat. This time we only sailed for a month as we could go through the Suez Canal.
