“I was at school during the war. I went to Old Bedford Road School Luton there were 9 classes and 300 children. I remember one day we were rushed to the air raid shelter, which was underneath the playground. We were there for an hour and there was a huge crash. A bomb had landed above us. We just sat there when the teachers said move we moved. When we came out we saw that the bomb had been dropped on a hat factory. Hats, ribbons, straw hoods were flying everywhere. They were strewn over the neighbouring roofs and buildings. I remember cooking over the fields the day war was declared and wondering where the Germans were; I was 10 at the time. No onw knew what to expect. I was recall this story it is my 49th wedding anniversary."
