Early in 1941, Miss Emily Wilcox, my 8th grade teacher at Elizabeth Street School in Norwich, Connecticut announced an essay contest. The subject we were to write upon if we wished to enter was "The Courage of the Children of England; first place prize was to be $50.00, a considerable amount even today.
Miss Wilcox brought current events into the classroom as a daily event and, although many miles and an ocean separated our countries, we felt the pain of the British people. I entered that contest, followed the daily reports, listened to radio news broadcasts and tried to imagine those awful events happening in my city.
At Graduation Ceremony in June of 1941 my name was announced as winner of the prize. I wish I could recall the essay, but cannot. What I do remember is the general theme followed the opening; "What would you do if you ...". I had tried to put my home, my school, my neighborhood and city close to you.
