Saturday5th.May,1945.
Rose 07.30. Told to be ready for
moving- said goodbye to Private George
Laidlaw of the Pioneer Corps.Received NAFFI
pack-rested and read papers. Later,we were
arranged into parties of 25,and left the
Barracks in trucks at 12.10 p.m.. A long and
fast journey followed. We passed through
Fallingbostel,where our POW life had started
As far as I could judge we covered 100 miles,before we stopped at a camp. Saw News
film,and then continued our travels at 20.00
hours. We crossed the Weser and Ems Canal and reached EMSDETTEN .
Sunday,6th.May,19.45. Billetted in
tents-heavy rain- received good dinner.Slept
well. Rose 10.30 a.m.. At Medical Inspection Room- received treatment for
stomach! Too much unusual rich food- too
quickly. Read papers and slept in afternoon.
Received new trousers and shaving brush.
Wrote up story of march for George.
Monday,7th.May.1945.Rose 07.30 hours
Heard radio news. Very warm day. Wrote ten(10)letters. Heard on radio,that German armed forces had unconditionally surrendered
Walked into town,and atttended a very enjoyable E.N.S.A. Concert. Visited Centre
and inspected the Library.
Tuesday,8th.May,1945..V.E. DAY .
Rose at 07.30 hours.Read papers and listened
to the radio. The first party left for the
airfield. Received haversack ration. Rested
after dinner. Heard WINSTON CHURCHILL's speech declaring the end of the WAR in Europe. Completed packing in readiness for moving off.At 3.30 p.m. left camp by truck and reached airfield at 4.15 p.m. RHEINE. Received a light meal. Must have patience! At 7 p.m.,we left the airfield and returned to the camp at EMSDETTEN.We had supper and played cards with friends. Heard broadcast by H.M. King George VI .
