We were all expected to "do our bit" - dig for victory. When I was 14, I had the opportunity to spend a month in the Cotswolds - picking potatoes, plums and generally helping in the orchards or on the farms with others from my school. It was hard (and dirty) work but enjoyable! We camped near Broadway, and we were all there when the war ended. We all had 2 days holiday - while the plums we had picked went bad!!
