I had my 10th birthday in August 1939. My Scottish grandmother had sent money for my father to take me and my sister to spend the summer holiday in Scotland.
I鈥檓 not sure when we returned home, but when we got on the train in Edinburgh it seemed to be full of soldiers. We managed to find seats but I always feel sick on trains and the soldiers packing the corridors were smoking, which made me feel worse.
My memories of that journey are of struggling not to be sick as I pushed past all those soldiers and kitbags towards the toilets several times before we reached Kings Cross. The soldiers were mostly kind and sympathetic; it was my father who was impatient when I said I had to go again.
This memory has been submitted by The British Schools Museum on behalf of Mrs Mel Knights.
