On Remembrance Sunday 2005 in Whitehaven my grandfather Joseph (Joe) Toner was laying the wreath at the cenotaph in Whitehaven, England. My grandmother Joan Toner was there and my parents Patricia and Michael Toner were also there. Me and my parents arrived at Whitehaven in the morning around 10.35am and we proposed to walk right round to the Cenotaph to get a good view of my grandfather laying the wreath but uncannily we met my grandparents walking down out of their flat. I ran to meet them and I walked with them whilst my parents agreed to walk round to the cenotaph. The reason my Grandma was going to the parade before it began was to get a hymn leaflet from Frank Flynn, a family friend. After we had picked up our leaflet of Frank and spoken to (among others) David Brown, an ex-solider who fought in the Iraq war, me and my Grandma made sure my Granda had his wreath and then we met my Mam and Dad and went round to the cenotaph together. The parade then filed in and it was a good service. My granda laid the NVA wreath and then collected his walking stick off my Grandma and began a parade around Whitehaven. All the while at the Cenotaph another family friend Joseph Ritson (has a People's War account 'ritson valjos') had been taking photographs. The parade then went into Whitehaven Civic Hall for a service (I didn't see this) and then some went to St. Beghs church for a service for fallen Catholics (I didn't see this either). All in all, a good day. I will try to post a picture soon.
