During WW2 my mother served in the National Fire Service at Lowestoft, and my father in the RAF, finnishing his time as a Corporal 'chippy'. His work was mainly involved in the repair of wooden aeroplanes such as the Mosquito. Much of his time was spent in the Middle East in Palestine, Iraq and Egypt. He told many stories of how some Arabs were disruptive, including stealing annything that was not fixed - even if it was of no use to them whatsoever!
My mother and father were married in the war damaged Pakefield Church, with RAF and Fire Service personnel as Guard of Honour. When my brother and I were young, soon after WW2, my father would never take us to the beach, as he had seen more than enough sand in the desert!
