This story has been added to the 大象传媒 People's War site by CSV Kate Langdon on behalf of Mrs Lilian Dixon. The both fully understand the terms of conditions of the site.

The incident happened to my husband walking home from nightshift at 6 o'clock one morning. He worked for an electrical firm in Liverpool. It was freezing cold and no street lights because of the blackout. Coming down the hill he saw arms and legs lying in the street, all dirty. He got home just as the all-clear sounded.

I asked him if he was alright. "No" he said and went to bed. A neighbour came in asking what was wrong with Albert. I didn't know, he was too upset to say. Next day he didn't want to go to work, but it was government work.

After about a week Albert's friend Bill called in. He was Manager of the Co-op. When Albert came home from work his friend told him that the 'bodies and limbs' he'd come across were bare display models from John Lewis' Department Store. He felt so much better; it had all made him feel so sick and he couldn't forget it, but he did feel silly that he had not realised.
