This took place when I was about 2 and a half or three. My father was working on the railways and we lived in a bungalow which adjoined Firsby Station. This was situated just a few miles, maybe 4 or 5, from Spilsby Aerodrome. One day I remember as a child standing on top of the dustbin, talking to a Sailor!! While I was talking to the gentleman a large number of planes flew over but I can’t remember if they were fighter planes or not. I can’t remember what we spoke about, but the memory is still very vivid.
A second memory that happened at about this time. I was travelling on a bus with my mother. To my recollection we were the only civilians on the bus. I was sitting on the lap of an American serviceman, who kept giving me small chocolate buttons — a massive treat in those days!!!
I can remember playing with my baby version of a gas mask … I wanted to get it out of the box, so I ripped the box open!!!
