The church bell was to be rung during the war if the Germans invaded to warn everybody.

But it was a mistake by the church verger; a Mr Patteden. I was sixteen years old and lived at 8 North Street, Sutton Valence when the church bell was rung. I went with a Mr Wedmore towards the village to go to our post. I was a messenger boy for the ARP; Mr Wedmore, a special constable.

We were stopped and told it was a false alarm.
