I was nearly 4 years old when ww2 broke out and living in Lydford Road in Paddington W9. one day during during the blitz an air raid was in progress and a dog fight ( English and German planes chasing each other around the skies)was taking place above our houses when i saw a pilot bale out of his damaged plane and slowly begin to float to earth, while doing so i noticed that his boots fell off as he floated down( later on in life (2001) i saw this very same pilot on a TV Programme telling his story of what happened on that day), while he was floating down a crowd of people started to chase down the road in the direction that he was going, waving bromb sticks and the such like thinking that he might be a German pilot.at about the same time though i am not sure if it was the same day a tail of a shot down plane landed in the basement area of our house and the ARP (Air Raid Police)were shouting to everyone to get into the shelters.
This was just one of the many things that i can remember from those far off days, Now i have a request, I am looking for a copy of a book which is called Barbed Wire Memories of Stalag 383 by M N McKibbin which gives a prisoners account of life in that camp during the war, the reason why i am looking for this book is that my late father spent the great part of the war as a prisoner in that camp having been captured at Dunkirk at the start of the war and after the war he obtained a copy of this book which sadly has got lost during many moves since then, I have aquired 3 copies of this book during last year and given them too my brother and older sister but I am looking for 1 other copy for my younger sister, so if anybody knows where i can obtain another copy i would be greatful.
Geoff Bartlett.
