Joined the forces at age 17 and was 27 when war was declared. Was in the Yorkshire & Lancashire Regiment based in Iceland for 2 years guarding the North West passage. Learned to ski and wore special snow shoes. White uniforms for camouflage.

Came home in 1944 to south of England to train for the second front - D+3. Job was to waterproof trucks. Army number was 4744108.
