After the invasion of Normandy, USS Bayfield went to Africa, Loaded soldiers there .From there we proceeded to the Invasion of Southern France. Invasion wasnt nearly as bad as Normandy. After the beachhead had been secured, we beached our landing craft, and went ashore to look around.. I noticed a large concrete bunker, and decided to have a first hand look at it . Armed only with the sidearm ,the old 45 automatic. Just as caauslly as going in ones own home , I opened the door and walked in. To my surprise ,there were about a dozen German soldiers ,sitting around a table. I quickly slammed the door and ran around to the rear of the bunker .
The German soldiers were pouring out the rear door. They were as surprised as I was and stopped, and threw up their hands, They didnt want to fight, they wanted to surrender to some one. Pulling out the trusty old 45, pointing it at them ,and motioning toward the beach. They started marching to the beach, hands over their heads, scared to death.
They were marched down to the beachmaster,. Here are some German prisoners ,sir . Beach master said I dont have any facilities to take care of prisoners, Well ,sir ,neither do I , shall I turn them loose ?? Beach master says ,well ok , tell them to go sit over there .
Got no recognition for that escapade, just scared emotions , then , look what I done , then felt sorry for them .
