I was at Carmountside school in the summer time,my gas mask was held in a round tin and one day we went walking on Wetley Moor common. There were lots of blackberries and bilberries to pick but I had nothing to put them in so--I took out the mask and put it on so I could use the tin for the friut. Granny Reardon was in the house when I returned and got a shock seeing me in the mask ,she thought something big was going on.
British Aluminium had a factory where they made the spitfire near where I used to walk. At Udell's farm they dropped incendiary bombs which set fire to the fields and it looked like it was day light. This area was very popular with families as there was a sandy bank to the river and they went for picnics and swimming in the summer hoidays.
Mother died at my birth leaving my father to bring up 5 sons,my grandmother came back from Canada to help look after us.My two eldest brothers were fighting in the war,the eldest in Burma as a commando.
