My mother never really spoke about the war, but when she did, she always told this story. The docks in Liverpool were a prime target, and the Wirral was apparently, regualry bombed, because of their proximity to LIverpool. One night, when there was a bombing raid on, my mother and her family took refuge under the stairs. The raid was heavy, and during the course of the raid the house was hit, but mercifully, only took superficial damage. Her bedroom however was hit and so were all her toys, including her teddy bear. The house six doors away wasn't so lucky, and the entire house was destroyed, including the family, whom were aLL killed. They were buried in one grave
I later brought mum a replacement teddy, for the one she lost, and we placed it in her coffin, when she died, so she could always have it with her. That's the one story she told, although she did confess that my grandmother brought black market meat for the family!!!
