The Bungalow was cold. Sometimes the water in the glass by the side of my bed froze overnight and clocks stopped with the cold. My mother heard one day that the local had some paraffin in for those who could provide their own container. She hurriedd off and managed to get an empty one pint beer bottle- I think it was a brown al bottle- and she bought one pint of paraffin, enough to light a small oil lamp if necessary as we frequently had electricity breakdowns of at least three days at a time. She was hurrying home with this precious bottle on a very snowy, icy patch, when she slipped and fell. Knowing she dare not let go of the bottle she just fell and lay there, clutcking the bottle to her chest. Just at this moment an army convoy was passing and shouted rude remarks about women being drunk at ten in the morning.
