I signed up in 1945, I was 21 years old. I took special entry and applied to train as an officer. I was an Artillery Lieutenant. We were sent to Wales for training. I had never been away from home before. We were sent up hills and downhills and i the evening we sampled the beer!
In 1944/5 I was in Holland and I came across a German Swastika flag. This flag had been patched in the corner. I gave the soldier a bottle of brandy and he gave me the flag. I have a book and in the book is a picture of a solider holding the very same flag, patch and all!
In the book there is a picture of a troop fitter and myself. A jeep had slid off the road and was really stuck. I said "How long is it going to take you to get this on the road?":-) It is a very appropriate caption for the picture.
