Title: Young at the time of war, school, family, education

We had taken in an evacuee called Donald Hansen. I had lived near the old Leicester football stadium. I remember a bomb had landed on the old Leicester football ground. In our backyard we had a brick bomb shelter which was used during the air raids. The government was really strict on lights showing during blackouts, my mother received a fine of 10 shillings when a policeman was walking by and saw a glimmer of light showing during the air raids.
I was very young when the Second World War began. The rationings had come about during 1940. We had limited access to all manner of sweets and foods. We had access to all kinds of entertainment which was mainly cinema. I had regularly visited 鈥淭he Regal Cinema鈥 which was one of 26 in Leicester city. We used to watch such films as cowboy western etc.
I went to grammar school which is called 鈥淥ldham & Newton鈥檚鈥 (founders of the schools in 1760) which is located in central Leicester. I had paid a giny for each term which was a short time. The teaching was superb and was very formal professional and strict. After the war I had entered and gained a position in the RAF (Royal Air Force).

Message 1 - Oldham & Newton's

Posted on: 31 May 2005 by stephtaylor79

Colin,
My gran went to this school in the 1920s. I'm trying to find out a bit more about it - does it still exist & operate as a school? Do you know what it is called now?

Any information you can give would be appreciated.
Kind regards,
Steph.

Message 2 - Oldham & Newton's

The School is Alderman Newton's and I believe it still exists but not in the same form or location.

The original Boy's school was the Greencoat school and was regarded as the Cathedral school as it was located almost next to the Cathedral.

The Girl's school was founded much later and sited opposite the Cathedral.

My late brother attended the school in the mid 1920's and I was there 1940-45. Both scholarship boy's from Charnwood Street school.

There are more details and photographs of the boy's school to be found in www.leicesterandleicestershire.com/
